DGWT Rankings Explained & Updated
In this article we’ll take a peek at the latest DGWT qualification rankings update. We also feel that it is necessary to go more in-depth into rankings and standings as these are two separate things and shouldn’t be mixed up.
Europeans Climb In The Top 10
Recently we ran a new update to the Disc Golf World Tour rankings. In this update the DGWT ranking points awarded for the Beaver State Fling 2015 expired and points of the 2016 Beaver State Fling were added. The ranking positions of the European players saw some big shifts as the Lithuanian Open 2015 points expired at the same time. The two European players in the top 10, Simon Lizotte and Seppo Paju, move up in the rankings and keep on closing in on the very top.
This is due to process of evening out the points awarded for the European and US events. The 2015 National Tour (NT) events were in the WT1 category while the 2016 NT events are WT2 category. More points are awarded for WT1 events than WT2 events. The 2015 NT events were categorized as WT1 to even out the difference between European and US players since there were only 7 NT events compared to the 10 EuroTour (ET) events in 2015. The 2016 season will feature 7 NT events and 6 ET events, both categorized as WT2 events for DGWT qualification rankings purposes. Check the rankings page for full rankings.
DGWT Qualification Rankings Vs. DGWT Standings
The DGWT qualification rankings and DGWT standings are two separate things. The DGWT qualification rankings include several significant disc golf events, e.g. DGWT events, National Tour, PDGA Majors, and many more. Rankings are used for qualification for DGWT events. In the 2016 DGWT season top 100 players in the rankings are given priority to register for each DGWT event. The rankings also give an overview of players’ performances in significant disc golf events.
DGWT standings are based solely on points awarded in DGWT events. At the end of each season the player with most points will be crowned as the DGWT season winner. The winner will receive a trophy and a special DGWT Golden Jacket provided by Dude.
The DGWT Champion title goes to the player who wins the tour championship event. In 2016 the championship event is the USDGC, held in October at Rock Hill, SC, USA. The champion will receive a $10,000 prize. The stakes are certainly high at the final event of the DGWT!
European Open Points Revised
For this update the points of the European Open were also revised. Historically the European Open has been a PDGA Major event and this year’s event certainly was on par with all of the previous events, up to having the distinct ”major feel” that the players appreciated. WT1 level DGWT points were awarded at the European Open 2016 for DGWT standings and qualification rankings purposes.
