Changes for 2017

With the opening event of the second season of the Disc Golf World Tour just around the corner a little tour update survey is due. The 2017 brings two remarkable changes to the World Tour. Some of the events are expanded to accommodate a broader field with multiple divisions so that more players get to experience the Disc Golf World Tour events. Another significant change is that the 2017 Disc Golf World Tour Champion will be decided based on points accumulated in all World Tour events.

Disc Golf World Tour champion decided on overall tour points

Last year was the inaugural season of the Disc Golf World Tour and the new tour should be attractive to as many players as possible. More players having an opportunity to claim the Disc Golf World Tour championship at the crowning event would also keep the race for the championship interesting until the very end. Thus a decision was made to follow the fine example set by the USDGC – one of the sport’s most esteemed events. The first four Disc Golf World Tour events in 2016 served a means to become eligible to compete for the Disc Golf World Tour championship at the season finale in October.

Now that the tour has matured and more familiar to the players the players who actively participate in Disc Golf World Tour events and succeed in them should be rewarded. In 2017 the tour champion will be the player who earns most points in all four Disc Golf World Tour events. Naturally it’s not mandatory to participate in all four events to win the World Tour championship but highly recommendable as missing a single event will likely give an unbeatable edge to other players. Points are awarded based on players’ performance in the open division in DGWT events. This is due to the fact that the final event, USDGC, is an MPO only event.

Disc Golf World Tour experience available for everyone

This year Disc Golf World Tour events will be accessible for a broader player base. More players will enjoy the Disc Golf World Tour experience in 2017. Players have an option of choosing a suitable division for them from the multiple divisions available in some of the World Tour events. In some cases the local promoter has even gone to the extent of designing a new course to accommodate a larger field!

Aussie Open sets the pace with it’s five divisions. Players traveling to Perth can compete in MPO, FPO, MPM, MA1 and FA1 divisions at the 2017 kick-off, which is only two weeks away. All Aussie Open participants compete on the same course and layout.

The second leg of the 2017 World Tour, Konopiste Open, goes to new lengths to offer the top-notch Disc Golf World Tour experiences for as many players as possible. The event expands to actually two events. Konopiste Challenger will cater to the amateur players on completely new course specifically designed for the event. The new course is also located in the gorgeus Konopiste castle park. This allows a 234-player field in seven different divisions. 144 open division players (132 MPO & 12 FPO) compete on their own course while 90 players participating in one of the five amateur divisions (MA1, MA2, MA3, FA1 & MJ1) get to compete on the brand new course. The USDGC will remain as an MPO only event as it has traditionally been. This is also the reason why Disc Golf World Tour points are awarded only to players participating in the MPO division in all of the World Tour events. The tour champion will be decided on points accumulated by performance in MPO divisions in all four Disc Golf World Tour events.
