DGWT Championship at stake at the USDGC

The crowning event of the inaugural Disc Golf World Tour season is only couple days away! The competitors of the United States Disc Golf Championship will start their 4-day battle at the fifth event of the DGWT on Wednesday October 5th. There’s a lot at stake at the USDGC this week as three titles will be decided on Saturday: US Champion’s title, Tour Champion’s title, and DGWT 2016 Points title.

The US champion and the Tour Champion will be won by the player who wins the USDGC 2016. The DGWT 2016 Season winner is the player who earns the most DGWT points in DGWT events. The last title is a three man show, but all USDGC participants are gunning for the US and Tour champions titles.

Best of 9 nations

86 top players of our sport from 9 different countries have gathered to Rock Hill, South Carolina. The roads they have taken may vary but all of them have earned one of the coveted USDGC spots by performing well in one of the qualifying events. The field is packed with world-class talent ready to put on an epic show.

Paul McBeth is the defending US champion

Paul McBeth is the defending US champion and the current DGWT points leader. By winning the USDGC last year he completed the legendary grand slam of sweeping all of the 2015 PDGA Majors. He knows the course and has participated in all four DGWT tournaments held this year. He has racked up points steadily with two victories and two very close second place finishes. By doing so he has put himself in a convincing lead in the DGWT standings.

Wysocki continues hot streak?

Rick Wysocki has had a successful year.

Rick Wysocki has had a successful year.

This might be the time for Ricky Wysocki who has been on fire this season, and as the season has progressed, he has constantly improved his game. He finished third at La Mirada, nearly won the European Open and won the European Masters. He is no stranger to Winthrop either – last year he was the runner-up. Wysocki might well don the golden DGWT season winner jacket on come Saturday if he is victorious or places well ahead of McBeth to rack up the points needed for the first place.

Past champions and new stars

Nate Doss won the USDGC in 2008.

The player list of the USDGC 2016 boasts with disc golf’s top talent who are all noteworthy challengers. Among them are past US champions, including Nate Doss, Will Schusterick and Nikko Locastro, who have proven their ability to come out on top at Rock Hill. Some of the more recently appeared top players, such as Eagle McMahon, Nate Sexton and Jeremy Koling, are also household names at the top of the leaderboards.

KJ Nybo is currently 3rd in DGWT standings.

One shouldn’t forget the Europeans either who have arrived in throngs at Rock Hill. 28 of the 86 players are from Europe. Leading the pack is Karl Johan Nybo, whose trademark solid game in the last three DGWT events has earned him the third spot in the DGWT standings. He is one of the three players who still has a chance of becoming the first DGWT season winner.

Right behind him is a Finn who was crowned as the European Champion about a month ago. We’re talking about Leo Piironen who is right behind KJ Nybo at fifth place. Pasi Koivu, Seppo Paju and Henrik Johansen have all made appearances in top 10s of big US events and are familiar with the grounds of Winthrop University. They’re all eager to challenge the American pros on their home soil.
