Player Spotlight Series, Part 9: Paul McBeth
The Disc Golf World Tour continues this week, as the Konopiště Open kicks off Thursday. Making his second appearance in our Player Spotlight Series is La Mirada Open champion Paul McBeth:
We are a couple of months into the season now. How is your game feeling so far?
It’s getting back to where I want it coming off a few months off because the back injury has slowed me down, but I’m back on track now.
You had about a month off from tournaments after the La Mirada Open and got to venture east and see different things like the National Collegiate Disc Golf Championships. How was that?
It’s always a great time heading to the collegiate championships. The difference is they are representing a school and a team, which shows a different side of the sport. It shows a bond between the players and a competitiveness and rivalry between schools.
You wrapped up a tough three-man battle at the Nick Hyde Memorial, and now have big events coming up one after the other. What’s it like to have guys like Nate and Simon, who are friends but also push you competitively week in and week out?
It’s great because we are friends off the course, so for me, it’s a challenge to see them as competitors all the time on the course. But it’s a new challenge that I’m willing to face head on. I need to find a way to separate the two for 18 holes a day.
After all of the build up and excitement, the Disc Golf World Tour got underway in March. What was your experience at the first event?
It was a new experience with all the media obligations we had, but it also brings the spotlight to all the players who have been wanting this for so long. I hope it continues to grow and the media gets even bigger event after event.
After the Glass Blown Open, you headed to the Czech Republic for the Konopiště Open. What kinds of extra preparations go into traveling internationally and preparing for a tournament in a short window?
This is new to me in such a short notice, so I’ll let you know how it goes!
You said earlier that you were excited about this event, since you’ll be playing in a place you haven’t played before. What are you looking forward to about the trip and the course?
I’m looking forward to meeting new players and fans. Everything about the Czech Republic will be new to me. I hear the course is a monster but absolutely beautiful, so I’m ready to see the hype!
Thank you to Paul for taking the time to talk to us as he looks to conquer the tough Franz Ferdinand course for the Konopiště Open. Keep checking back for the latest news surrounding the DGWT and for more Player Spotlight interviews.
